Pregnancy Week 31

Baby’s Growth During the 31st Week of Pregnancy

Weighing in at 3 plus pounds and 18 inches long, your baby is quickly approaching the birth length through there’s still some pounds to pack on before the big delivery day. But while the weight gain continues, your baby is getting smarter as the brain is developing connections, trillions of them.

Your baby is now processing information, tracking light, turning the head from side to side, moving arms and legs, and perceiving signals from all 5 senses. All this in addition to putting in longer stretches of sleep which is why you’re probably noticing more defined patters of awake and moving and sleeping and still periods.

Body Changes in the 31st Week of Pregnancy

What is commonly called “premilk” or colostrum may be leaking from your breasts lately. If you’re experiencing this it’s time to pick up nursing pads to protect your bra and clothes. If your current bra is too tight, you may want to also consider picking up a nursing bra in at least one cup size bigger than you need now. When your milk comes in, you’ll be grateful to have the extra room in your bra.

If you feel your uterus tightening now and then you may be feeling the common random contractions known as Braxton Hicks contractions. These contractions typically last only 30 seconds, they’re irregulat, and at this point, they should be infrequent and painless.

However, frequent contractions, even those that don’t hurt, may be a sign of preterm labor. Call your doctor immediately if you have more than four contractions in an hour or there are other signs of preterm labor such as an increase in vaginal discharge or a change in the type of discharge, abdominal pain, or menstrual-like cramping.
